MSC Oscar, along with MSC Zoe and MSC Oliver, is the largest container ship in the world (as of August 2015). Inaugurated on January 8, 2015, MSC Oscar assumed the title of "largest container ship" from CSCL Globe, which was inaugurated in November 2014. MSC Oscar was named after the son of Diego Aponte, President and CEO of Mediterranean Transport Company (MSC).
MSC Oscar was built by Daewoo in Korea for $140 million. The ship was initially planned for 18,400 TEUs. After completion, the capacity is 19,224 TEUs, including the capacity for 1,800 refrigerated containers.
Due to the ship's tonnage weighing only 197,362 DWT, it can only fully load containers if each container has an average weight of less than 10.2 tons. With an average weight of 14 tons per container, the capacity is reduced to approximately 14,000 TEUs.
